Hanover //MS. KAYANNA SENIOR (YOUTH AWARD - HANOVER) 2009

 

Kayanna Alicia Senior was born in the parish of St. James on September 9, 1985. She has an outstanding resume in philanthropy at her young age and has no intention of slowing down. As a current science student, her career goal is in the field of medicine where she hopes to pursue even more outreach programmes for the less fortunate.

 

Miss Senior grew up in Hopewell, Hanover and attended the Herbert Morrison Technical High School where she received the Top Academic Achiever Award in 2001. She pursued her A’ Level subjects at the Hampton School, where she matriculated for                The University of the West Indies to read for a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Chemistry. She has completed her first degree and hopes to continue studies in Medical Science.

 

Miss Senior is instrumental in the coordination of the Hanover Health Fair for which she has served as project chairman for the past two years. Her involvement in this activity has stoked her deep interest in the medical field.

 

She has acquired leadership skills from her involvement with a charitable organisation in Hanover where she serves as Vice-President. She has, in collaboration with the executive body planned Labour Day and other voluntary projects that have enhanced her spirit for voluntarism.

 

Miss Senior has worked closely with girls in her community through Girls Empowerment Seminars. She is a motivational speaker and assists with building self-confidence and positive thinking.

Hanover //MR. STEPHEN DENNIS (YOUTH AWARD - HANOVER) 2009

 

Stephen George Dennis has always been a very active member of his school community; he enrolled at the Rusea’s High School in 2002 and at the end of his tenure was afforded the opportunity of being Valedictorian in 2007.

 

He attended the Lucea Preparatory school in his formative years, where he developed an interest in becoming an Engineer. As an aspiring Engineer, Mr. Dennis challenged himself with the Science subjects while attending High School. He graduated with nine subjects allowing him to matriculate for the Montego Bay Community College.

 

A good student cannot become an excellent student without participation in co-curricular activities and voluntary service. With this in mind, Mr. Dennis joined the service organisation Key Club. He was also involved in the school’s athletics programmes. He has worked closely with the Wesleyan Holiness Church of Green Island and with the elderly in his community.

Hanover //MRS. LAURA BRYAN (HANOVER) 2009

Mrs. Laura Bryan had very humble beginnings in Sandy Bay, Hanover. She attended the Sandy Bay Elementary School and went on to Free Hill Elementary, but was unable to not complete her studies. Later, she migrated to the United States of America where she finally attained her high school diploma at the age of thirty-four.

 

Strong-willed and determined to be successful, she joined the staff of a department store in New York and worked her way up the ranks to the post of Customer Service Supervisor. After twenty-seven years she retired to her island home where she felt her work was not yet done. She had worked all her life to support herself, and now she was ready to give back.

 

Mrs. Bryan contributes to the Early Childhood Education facilities in the communities of Sandy Bay, Montpelier, and Hopewell. She has donated land to develop a playground which she maintains and supervises. She recently installed swings and a basketball hoop at the facility. She is also a director in the Kiwanis Club of Hopewell and assists the Sandy Bay Basic School in meeting the requirements and targets set by the Early Childhood Commission.

 

Mother, teacher, mentor, nation-builder, volunteer; there are many words that could be used to describe Mrs. Bryan, but today she is an award recipient.

Hanover //SHAURNA F. MILLER (HANOVER) 2008

Miss Shaurna Frozell Miller is a devoted performing artist who gains fulfilment from sharing her knowledge and experience in the arts with members of her community.

 

Through her full-time and voluntary commitments, she exposes young people to different aspects of the country’s rich culture; and encourages positive participation and dialogue on national issues. She is a steward of love and peace, and is a proud resident of the parish of Hanover.

 

Ms Miller’s voluntary contributions include work as a Mediator and Peer Coordinator at the Hanover Mediation Centre. She was also a trainer in Conflict Management for the Dispute Resolution Foundation.

 

A member of the Board of Governors at the Kendal Basic School, she is also the President of the Harding Hall Parent Teachers’ Association, and Cultural Agent at the Green Island High School.

 

The fourth child of Fredrick and Mabel Miller, Shaurna was born on the 15th day of February, 1968 in Kendal, Hanover. She was educated at the Kendal Primary School, Rusea’s High School and the Jamaica School of Drama, at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts.

 

At the School of Drama, she earned a certificate in Theatre Arts and was also certified as a Cultural Manager by the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC). She has become a resource person, as well as a Speech and Drama Adjudicator for the JCDC; and is a judge and a trainer for the organisation’s annual Festival Queen Competition. 

 

Presently a Senior Teacher at Green Island High with responsibility for Cultural Development, Ms Miller’s dedication to the development of culture, has seen the school becoming one of the recognised performing and theatre arts schools at the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) level. She is also an External Assessor in Theatre Arts for CXC.

 

In addition to her role as a proprietor of Miller’s Meat Market in Logwood, Hanover, Shaurna is a Director of Conserve It Limited, suppliers of solar energy equipment and supplies.

Hanover //MAXINE EVANS, HANOVER (2007)

Maxine E. Evans, Vice Principal of Rusea’s High School, has made significant contributions to the educational system in Hanover; provided invaluable services to the church; and has devoted her time and expertise to guide the work of several organizations, which strive to enhance the lives of persons in the wider community.

Barbara Reid was born in Lucea, Hanover on the 20th of May 1947.

Hanover //ENID GONSALVES, HANOVER (1993)

Enid Veronica Gonsalves, has been principal of the Lucea Primary School since 1975.

Hanover //LORENE HOLNESS-MUIR, HANOVER (2002)

Lorene Holness-Muir, the Governor-General's recipient for the parish of Hanover, is known all over western Jamaica for her work in community development.

Hanover //Citation for Mr. Winfield Delano Murray, Hanover (2006)

Winfield Delano Murray was born in a family of six in the district of Hoddington and grew up in the community of Bachelors Hall in rented apartments. As the eldest of the children, young Winfield remembers that life was not easy for him as a part of his daily chore sometimes included staying from school to care for his younger brothers and sisters.

Hanover //David Henry Gardner, Hanover (2005)

David Henry Gardner, born on December 28, 1970, grew up in a very large family where his father Clarence Gardner was the sole breadwinner.  His father worked on numerous farms, doing odd jobs to make ends meet, while his mother Veanora undertook the gracious role of a housewife, caring for the family.

Hanover //Citation for Ansel Brown J.P., Hanover (2004)

Ansel Brown, the fifth of eleven children, was born on June 11, 1943, to Salethiel and Winnifred Brown in the district of Jericho, Hanover. His father and mother were labourer and part-time worker respectively on a cane estate.

Hanover //Citation for Marva Trenfield, Hanover (2003)

Most of Marva Trenfield’s life has been centered around the church, the school and other community activities. She has a deep concern for young people and focuses much of her energies on their development. Humility has always been one of her outstanding virtues.

Hanover //Darius Holt: An active community worker, Hanover (2000)

Darius Holt was born November 3, 1924, the last of eleven children. His parents, Moriah Shippy and William Holt, were small farmers residing in Success district in the hills of Hanover. He attended Gurney’s Mount Elementary School where he attained the sixth standard. He is from a humble family and his mother, being a woman of vision, would  encourage him to attend school, even without lunch.

Hanover //Citation to Mr. Vernal Edward Farquharson, Hanover (1994)

Vernal Farquharson who resides at Haughton Borough in Lucea was born 56 years ago in Flint Valley, New Market. He was the first of eight children of his parents who were humble peasant farmers. He worked hard through school vowing to improve on the vocation of his parents. But his father died when Vernal was just 18 and his mother had to work very hard to support him at the Jamaica School of Agriculture. But he achieved his goals not only professionally but also as a successful practicing farmer.

Hanover //Citation to Mr. Donald Sylvester Smith, Hanover (1995)

Donald Sylvester Smith born in 1919 at Preston, St.Mary, lost his father when he was six months old and his mother when he was eight years and was adopted by Teacher F.T. Sinclair whom he says gave him protection, love and growth spiritually, morally and intellectually. He started in elementary school at age 7 and after passing the Third Jamaica Local Examination he entered Mico Training College for three years and joined the teaching profession in 1943 becoming in succession Principal of Pleasant Valley All Age in 1944, Haddo 1944-46, Mount Peto in Hanover 1947-68 and Petersfield All Age 1969-71. He was Supervisor of the Ministry of Education Internship Programme in Cornwall 1972-74, and Education Officer of the Ministry of Education.

Hanover //Citation to Mr. Jeremiah Alexander Dehaney, Hanover (1996)

Jeremiah Dehaney was born in Springfield, Hanover in 1948 the seventh of the nine children of Paul and Marian Dehaney. They were very poor people, father a manual labourer on roads with the help of a little farming while mother and housewife sold pepper and yams at the Linstead Market. Jeremiah attended Maryland All Age School and was successful in nine subjects of the Jamaica School Certificate examination.

Hanover //Edna Maud Griffiths-Petgrave, Hanover (1998)

The oldest of five children, Edna Maud Griffiths-Petgrave was born in Ginger Hill, St. Elizabeth in 1925 to Christian parents who were farmers. She attended elementary school and continued her education to pass the first, second and third Jamaica Local Examinations.

Hanover //Charles Wilson - Contractor, hotelier, housing developer receives Hanover award: 'Hard work assured my success' (1999)

As with many youths of his day, Charles Wilson, born on February 10, 1924 could not afford the luxury of a secondary education.  In fact, he often had to forego studies at the Green Island Elementary school to assist his father in the manufacturing of brick ovens, thereby augmenting the family's income. Though he had only attained the sixth standard, he realised the importance of self-reliance.

Hanover //Evelyn Jones -great teacher (1997)

Education Officer for the Primary Schools Division of Hanover, Evelyn Jones, has been awarded the prestigious Governor-General's Achievement Award for the parish of Hanover for this year. It was a surprising but welcome announcement to the teacher who says she has known hardship, but who used the problems presented by life as challenges to rise above adversity rather than give in to despair.
