Trelawny //CALVIN ALTEMAN HALL (2010)

Calvin Alteman Hall was born in St Ann and from very early, displayed a keen interest in making a difference to his country.  He has concerned himself with matters relating to community development and is a member of the Falmouth Heritage Restoration Company, and the Falmouth Missionary Church Youth Fellowship.  He is a volunteer with the elderly, and has organised special community treats for children with disabilities. His commitment to community development has earned him the Prince of Wales Foundation Award, and sponsorship to England on a special leadership training programme.

 

Mr. Hall was cognizant of the fact that he could make an even greater contribution to his community with the benefit of a solid education.  His academic achievements include CXC passes in Woodwork and Technical Drawing earned while a student at the Albert Town High School and Certification in Information Technology and Masonry from the HEART Trust/NTA in Falmouth, where he was named the Most Outstanding Student of his graduating class. 

 

After graduating from the HEART Trust/NTA programme, he joined the Falmouth Heritage Renewal training programme.  In six years, his dedication to his work and craft propelled him to become one of their leading trainers. He has taught at the local and international levels.  Mr. Hall’s work caught the attention of His Royal Highness Prince Charles who visited Falmouth in 2008.   He was invited to study at the Prince of Wales’ Building Crafts Apprentices Programme in London. He successfully completed the programme and was awarded the Hancocks Award for Outstanding Achievement.

 

Mr. Hall is lauded for his positive attitude, his attention to detail and his enthusiasm to learn. When he is not busy at the Falmouth Heritage Renewal, he works closely with disabled children.

Trelawny // PHERONE OGILLIVE GRIFFITHS (2010)

Pherone Ogillive Griffiths is a son of Spring Garden, Trelawny.  His formative years were spent at the Albert Town Primary School where he was prepared for further studies at William Knibb High School, Brown’s Town Community College and the Bethlehem Teachers’ College. 

 

He sees life as a journey worth pursuing in the interest of self and community development.  Through his instrumentality and with the assistance of LASCO, he started a Sporting Equity Project in schools and communities in the Albert Town area.  As a student, he was a Student Counsellor, Assistant Sports Co-coordinator, and a member of the Circle K Club.  He is also a member of the Kiwanis Club of Upper Trelawny, and is actively involved with the Youth Club of Rock Spring.

 

A member of staff of the Spring Garden Primary and Infant School, Mr. Griffiths is described as a dedicated teacher, self-motivated and reliable.  He is currently the Technology Resource Teacher for the parish of Trelawny and conducts Information Technology workshops at various schools within the parish. He also facilitates the Level One HEART Trust/NTA Data Operation training at the Spring Garden Primary and Infant School, allowing students to pursue their interest in Information Technology.

Trelawny //PAUL ‘PABLO’ MCNEIL (2010)

Paul McNeil, affectionately called Pablo or Coach, has been involved in sports since his youth.  He started out as a cricketer who played for Jamaica and the West Indies, but later switched to athletics and has been a coach since 1969.  Mr. McNeil is credited with laying the foundation for Olympic Champion and World Record holder Usain Bolt.  He also coached Lerone Clarke and Marvin Anderson, both past students of William Knibb High School.

 

Although he did not pursue secondary level education, Mr. McNeil was able to overcome this setback and has excelled in the area of Physical Education.  He obtained several scholarships to pursue studies in coaching, including at the Pepperdine University, but not before being an apprenticed mechanic to a blind man in Kingston. Of that experience, ‘Coach’ said this was where he learnt the value of discipline and caring.

 

Mr. McNeil has coached at many schools in Jamaica, such as, Ardenne, St. Catherine, Meadowbrook, and William Knibb Memorial High Schools. He has obtained personal athletic fame as co-record holder in 1965, with the late Hon. Herb McKenley.  He represented Jamaica in the 1964 and 1968 Olympic Games, and several other international events, including the Pan-American Games, the Central American and Caribbean Games, the West Indian Championship, Canadian National Championship and the Commonwealth of Nations Games.

 

He is described by his colleagues as meticulous, disciplined and dedicated. He is commended for his enthusiasm and willingness to contribute all he has learnt over the years to young athletes. He further wishes to share with the public, some of his personal experiences through a soon-to-be published book, ‘A Bolt of Lightening and Me’.

Trelawny //MS. MELODY GOLDING ( YOUTH AWARD - TRELAWNY) 2009

Melody Antoinette Golding was born in Clark’s Town, Trelawny on June 5, 1988. As a child she had a strong interest in electronics and the field of Engineering. It is no surprise that she is completing her studies at the University of Technology (UTech) in Electrical Engineering with a view to nation-building and the expansion of her field in Jamaica.

 

Her formative years were spent at the Sawyers All-Age School. She then attended Westwood High School, where she maintained excellent grades and matriculated to enter the School of Engineering at UTech. While attending the University, she received a full scholarship and has maintained a Grade Point Average of 3.19.

 

Miss Golding is not only a high achiever but gives back to her school community through her participation in several clubs and societies and significant philanthropy. Through her Hall of Residence at UTech she has contributed to children’s homes and assisted children with their school assignments through the Homework Programme at the Jamaica National Children’s Home and the Mona Baptist Church. She has displayed tenacity by efficiently managing her school work and working with others to facilitate charitable work with children.

 

Miss Golding is lauded for her team-building and teamwork skills, outstanding leadership abilities, honesty, good manners and a display of high morals. Her attitude to her academics is commendable and she follows through with all her commitments and responsibilities.

Trelawny //MS. CORNELLIA RILEY (YOUTH AWARD - TRELAWNY) 2009

Cornellia Ann-Marie Riley was born on October 18, 1983 in Spanish Town, St. Catherine; she later moved to Ulster Spring, Trelawny and was schooled in that parish. She spent her formative years at the Duncan’s All-Age School where she was successful in the Common Entrance Examination and attended the Westwood High School.

 

Although she faced several challenges, Miss Riley was steadfast in her academics and gained success in her external examinations, where she gained four Distinctions and four Credits in the CXC Examinations as well as three GCE A’ level subjects. Her passion was in the field of Medicine, but after graduating from Ardenne High School in Kingston, she was unable to pursue her goal at that time.

 

Miss Riley persisted, and in the interim she worked at the Clarendon Distillery for a few months, saving as she earned. She was eventually able to attend to the University of the West Indies, Mona, where she obtained a Bachelor of Basic Medical Sciences Degree with First Class Honours. She subsequently matriculated to pursue a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery Degree (MBBS).

 

Miss Riley is currently the School of Medicine’s course representative and a member of the Medical Faculty Staff-Student Liaison Board. She is also a member of the Jamaica Medical Students Association Standing Committee on Public Health, is in charge of the anti-smoking campaign and is the Caribbean representative for the Christian Medical and Dental Society.

Trelawny //MRS. SONIA CROOKS, JP (TRELAWNY) 2009

Sonia Claire Crooks is a Justice of the Peace who is deeply involved in community development, especially as it relates to the youth. Being a sponsor of the Police Youth Club and Homework Centre, as well as a Cub Scout Leader at the Spring Garden School are indications of her commitment to nation-building. This was first realised when she entered the teaching profession which later culminated in her becoming a Principal.

 

In addition to being an educator, she has also found her niche in farming and uses it as a community-building tool, employing persons from her community to work on the farm and to assist in her Mini-Mart and Farm store business.

 

Mrs. Crooks is known in her community for her outreach programmes and touches many lives through her work. She came from very humble beginnings and was able to use her experiences to assist those who are in need. She inspires persons to ‘believe’ in their capacity to achieve all they can even through difficulties.

Trelawny //MAURICE G. LEVERMORE ( TRELAWNY) 2008

 

Maurice George Levermore is admired by his peers for his outstanding work in the use of music; and his goodwill in bringing young people and adults together in his community to support, unite and build camaraderie so that they live in harmony.

 

Mr. Levermore is known for his rousing instrumentals at community weddings and funerals and the annual tree lighting ceremony and Christmas treat for the indigent in his community. 

 

Raised under difficult financial circumstances by his grandparents, he was born in 1958 on the 12th day of November to a teenage mother. Although, as a young boy he struggled to find funding for his education, Mr. Levermore was not deterred and pressed towards achieving his goal of attending high school. He eventually graduated from the Dinthill Technical High School in St. Catherine, with five subjects at the CXC level.

 

He then took up volunteer work with the National Youth Service as a field officer in the area of agriculture. This equipped him for his employment at the Banana Company of Jamaica where he worked as a Quality Control Officer. When he was laid off at the downturn of banana production on the island, he returned to school.

 

Mr. Levermore now holds a Teaching Diploma from the Sam Sharpe Teacher’s College and is a senior teacher at York Castle High School, and National Adjudicator for the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) music competition.

 

On the basis of the leadership he exhibits, he was installed as a Justice of the Peace in 1992. In that role, he serves Trelawny as the Chairman of the Clarks Town Zone of the Lay Magistrates’; Association, and Vice-President of the parish association. He was instrumental in the formation of the Stewart Town Citizens’ Association, whose conception he aided in 1997. He has served the organisation as chairman for more than 11 years.

 

Mr. Levermore has served as the convenor of the Police Consultative Committee for the Stewart Town Police and as Acting Chairman of the Stewart Town Basic School.
